"England's Football Squad Falls to Iceland in Final Friendly Ahead of Euro 2024"

England faced the ire of some of its supporters following a 1-0 defeat to Iceland on Friday in their final warm-up match before the European Championship, contrasting with host nation Germany's comeback from a goal down to secure a 2-1 victory against Greece.

Jón Dagur Thorsteinsson outmaneuvered defender John Stones to score for Iceland in the 16th minute, evoking memories of England's disappointing elimination by Iceland at Euro 2016.

England struggled to create clear-cut opportunities against Iceland and narrowly avoided conceding a second goal when a promising Icelandic counterattack was thwarted by Thorsteinsson slipping as he took his shot.

"We learned a lot, and we know the performance wasn't good enough," remarked England manager Gareth Southgate to broadcaster Channel 4. "Equally, we needed the game; there are a lot of players whose minutes we're managing, and it was obviously a disjointed and disappointing performance, and we didn't show enough character." England, having defeated Bosnia-Herzegovina 3-0 on Monday, begins their tournament journey on June 16 against Serbia in Group C.

Meanwhile, Germany relied on substitute Pascal Gross' 89th-minute goal to secure a comeback victory over Greece a week before their Euro 2024 opener against Scotland in Munich.

Georgios Masouras gave Greece the lead in the 34th minute with a rebound after goalkeeper Manuel Neuer failed to hold a shot from Christos Tzolis. Arsenal forward Kai Havertz leveled the score in the 56th minute with a sharp turn and shot that deflected off Manolis Siopis.
